NOBODY WON THE QUIZ

You`re all hopeless. Or maybe endings are just not so memorable as beginnings though it seems to me these were pretty memorable. Anyway, to put you out of your misery and stop you all searching through the bookcases, here are the answers.

1.TIGER IN THE SMOKE.. Marjorie Allingham

4. TO THE LIGHTHOUSE. Virginia Woolf

5.IN THE SPRINGTIME OF THE YEAR. I just forget the name of the author.

6. THE BIRDS OF THE AIR. Alice Thomas Ellis

7.THE RADETZKY MARCH. Joseph Roth

8.BARCHESTER TOWERS. Anthony Trollope.

Now tell me they were all on the tip of your tongue.

Me too! I got Nos. 5 & 8 right. Do I get half-marks for having read No.2 and knowing that No.3 was "done" on Radio 4 this year? I suppose not.

The best last line of a book I know-- because it is completely perfect at that point-- is that of "Love in the time of Cholera"

Hopeless, indeed-- I got only the Lighthouse and the Trollope and should have come up with three more (Springtime, Elizabeth Bowen and Alice Thomas Ellis) since I had read those three. I have read and enjoyed all the Barchester novels and several years ago set out to do Phineas Finn, but each time I re-open it I get so bogged down in parliamentary reform that I put it aside. Any advice for a poor hopeless soul-- are we allowed/encouraged to skim and skip? (This is beside the point of your quiz, but came to my addled mind)

Think I`ll do a piece on this... am I allowed to skim and skip ? Hm. Answer will probably be yes, everyone else`s books but mine..

It's made me think just how carefully do I consider the last lines of a novel,hmm, interesting.

Next time I`ll do first lines. With my writing hat on, I spend far more time blood sweat and tears over the first and the last paras of a book than all the rest between.
